I have always enjoyed Kiest Park, ever since I first went there as a 10-year-old boy. While I admit it has “changed” since then, I think it is an under-appreciated crown jewel in the OC that just needs a little TLC. It has a nice, llloonnngg hike and bike trail (unlike that wimpy, short .6 [...]

Despite being located in a large metropolitan area, the Elm Fork manages to sustain a variety of wildlife as the river meanders through the Blackland Prairies.

Once an urban resort and amusement park, Lake Cliff Park retains only remnants of its former glory. But the still-standing pavilions, echoes of once extensive Japanese Gardens, and the calm of the lake make coming here a pleasure.

From William Holston:
Dixon Branch is a lovely creek, and nice short trail through the cedar woods. There is a pond on private land, which overflows into this creek and over some falls. I’ve seen wood ducks, herons, kingfishers, yellow warblers and red bellied woodpeckers. I sit on a huge limestone boulder, and listen to the [...]

My wife and I told our daughter when she woke up from her nap that we planned to spend the afternoon by going to Jimmy’s, buying an assortment of sausages, and grilling them. “Why don’t we barbecue at the park?” she asked. It was a real idea, so we obliged.

The manmade lake here is odd, but not nearly as odd as the four or five stone cattle that stand eating grass or lounging about, all named, I guess, after the Trammell Crow family women: Ruth, Lucy, Annette, and Margaret. Strange, but wonderful and hilarious.

Our favorite park is the one at the Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital. I have been told it is open to the public, so we go there often. It is fully fenced with nice, clean bathrooms. It has an area for smaller children and one for the bigger kids. It has a green space with a [...]

Dallas Parks: Ridgewood/Belcher Rec Center

I’d like to recommend the Ridgewood/Belcher Rec Center strictly because of their spray park. As a mother of three very small children that really aren’t old enough to swim in a regular pool, the whole concept of a spray park makes a lot of sense to me right now. I wish there were more spray [...]

I know that it is not necessarily a park, but if you ever have a chance to walk the Santa Fe Trail near the Holllywood Heights neighborhood you will not be disappointed. You can go to Woodrow Wilson High School and park your car at the park off of Glasgow or go over to Lindsley [...]

Pry your kids away from the recreational delights, and head west across the grass and into the woods beyond, and you find yourself in an arboreal paradise - a small, treed hill that overlooks the spring-fed lake at Kidd Springs.
