Caps on cusp of Cup after Washington takes 3-1 series lead in Stanley Cup Final

Fans poured onto the streets on Thursday night after the Washington Capitals won the National Hockey League's coveted Stanley Cup with a 4-3 defeat of Las Vegas's Golden Knights in Game 5.

The Golden Knights made it interesting in the third period with goals by James Neal and Reilly Smith, but Washington quickly put it away in the minutes thereafter.

Add in Ovechkin's successor as the team's star, Evgeny Kuznetsov, and T.J. Oshie, and it's easy to see why the Capitals had so much regular-season success.

After Vegas won the opener, the Capitals capped their four-game surge by rallying from a third-period deficit in Game 5, banishing so many years of playoff failure with big goals and tenacious play across their lineup. Marc-Andre Fleury, meanwhile, had another so-so performance in allowing four goals on 33 shots.

It is the first championship for the Capitals, who began play in 1974.

According to oddsmakers, the Golden Knights are a -145 favorite on the moneyline.

Colin Miller suffered a broken nose in Monday's 6-2 loss to the Washington Capitals in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final.

The spectacular individual effort tied the game 3-3 with just over 10 minutes to play in the game. Now, he doesn't have to carry the burden of being the best player never to win a title. Based on the series so far that has been the Capitals.

When the game went final, it looked a little something like this.

"I can't tell what's going to happen [Thursday], but I can tell you you're going to need your best game if you want to get this done".

Puck drops: 5 p.m. Smith scored his fifth goal of the playoffs, firing in a shot into a wide-open left side of the net off a crossing pass by Alex Tuch.
