AMD Zen 2 Update: 7nm EPYC in Labs Now, Launching in 2019
AMD looks to be setting a new bar for itself, announcing a 32-core second-gen ThreadripperCPU and more during their press conference at this year's Computex.
On Monday, Intel, the dominant CPU maker in the worlds of desktop and server systems, touted an upcoming 28-core Core X-series aimed at workstations, gamers, and other high-end desktop gear. The same applies to AMD's 2nd Generation Ryzen Threadripper processors, which could perhaps be the firm's biggest announcement this week. The new CPUs will feature either 24 or 32 cores, with two threads per core, for a total of 48 or 64 threads.
In an interview with Engadget, AMD's Jim Anderson said - "When we were bringing out 16-core, we already had on the drawing board, the 32-core, That's one of the reasons it can drop into the same TR4 socket, is because upfront we had that in mind". Due to this, several motherboard vendors reported that some of the current X399 motherboards on the market might struggle with power delivery to the new parts, and so we are likely to see a motherboard refresh. AMD also demoed the GPU running Cinema 4D to show that it has working silicon as it preps for launch, which it somewhat vaguely pegged for 2H 2018. However, not all processes are sensitive to these latencies and AMD has improved Infinity Fabric in the Zen+ design, so perhaps the hit will not be as significant as one might think. Many of these products were new systems coming from various OEM partners, such as Acer and the Predator Helios 500 gaming laptop announced last week and products from ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Huawei.
On Tuesday, AMD unveiled the first 7-nanometer graphics processing unit, the Radeon Vega GPU, set for launch later this year. Whilst providing 35 percent more performance on a smaller package, the Radeon Instinct will be able to support up to 32GB of HBM2 video RAM.
