Federal Bureau of Investigation agent Brock Domin wrote in court documents that Manafort "contacted and attempted to contact" two unnamed witnesses, "in an effort to influence their testimony and to otherwise hide evidence".
"Things went from bad to much worse for Paul Manafort - here's why", said Glenn Kirschner, a homicide prosecutor until last month for the District of Columbia U.S. Attorney's office.
Mueller is now asking a judge to either revise the terms of his release or revoke it entirely, which could mean he will have to stay in jail until his trial. Prosecutors say the contacts occurred earlier this year while Manafort was confined to his home.
The communications were 'in an effort to influence their testimony and to otherwise hide evidence, ' Domin wrote.
One minute after sending the news article, Manafort wrote: "We should talk. Basically P wants to give him a quick summary that he says to everybody (which is true) that our friends never lobbied in the U.S".
President Trump attacked the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Justice Department for failing to inform him Paul Manafort was being "secretly investigated" when he was hired to lead the 2016 presidential campaign. Gates has since pleaded guilty to making false statements and conspiring against the United States, with other charges dropped in a plea bargain. Manafort also attempted to use the two people to influence the distinguished group of former European political leaders they previously worked with, called the Hapsburg group, who were part of the alleged lobbying scheme.
According to a February indictment, Manafort in 2012 and 2013 used offshore accounts to wire more than 2 million euros to pay the former politicians, who were described as independent actors instead of paid lobbyists.
