After exchanging threats and insults since Mr Trump became President previous year, the United States and North Korea have been trying to set up a summit - originally planned for Singapore on June 12 - between their leaders, at which Mr Trump wants to pressure Pyongyang into giving up its nuclear weapons. The two men posed with the very large envelope in the Oval Office.
"I think so. I think there is a good chance that we'll have talks as planned in Singapore on June 12th".
Mr. Trump also revealed that he told North Korean vice chairman Kim Yong-chol that the USA will hold off on imposing more economic sanctions against Pyongyang while they are working towards a denuclearization agreement. "We will see what we will see".
After the meeting, the North Korean delegates chatted with Trump on the White House lawn. "I don't want to say like we talked about a lot of things we really did", he continued.
North Korea issued an unusually conciliatory response to Trump's letter, with senior diplomat Kim Kye Gwan saying in a statement that Pyongyang had "inwardly highly appreciated" Trump's efforts for a summit, calling it a "bold decision, which any other USA presidents dared not".
When asked about the content of the letter he received, Trump joked, asking how much money was offered for the information.
Plans for the meeting in Singapore had been cast into doubt after Trump suddenly announced his withdrawal last week, only to announce a day later that it could still get back on track.

As a result, American officials planning the summit are trying to work around sanctions that prohibit the US from picking up the bill, or may ask Singapore to pay for Kim's hospitality at the Fullerton, a neoclassical hotel along the Singapore River, two people with knowledge of the matter told The Washington Post on Friday. Much had been made of a letter his visitor was bringing from the North Korean leader, but Trump's comments left it unclear when he had even managed to take a look at it.
Trump cancelled the on-off North Korea summit in late May, blaming the country's "tremendous anger and open hostility". A formal peace between the United States and North Korea, one of the world's most brutal, aggressive and unpredictable regimes, should not precede full denuclearization.
"Kim Jong Un said that the DPRK´s will for denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula still remains unchanged and consistent and fixed", KCNA reported after their meeting in Pyongyang on Thursday.
Kim was welcomed to the White House earlier by Chief of Staff John Kelly, who together with CIA Korea chief Andy Kim led the official into the Diplomatic Reception Room, then along the Colonnade and past the Rose Garden to the Oval Office. Japan's defense chief urged caution in dealing with North Korea, while his South Korean counterpart said there was no reason to question the North Korean leader's sincerity. "But I think they'd like to see something happen, and if we can work that out, that'd be great", he said.
North Korea Leader Kim Jong Un wants another country to pay for his stay at a pricey Singapore hotel in June.
President Trump's remarks follow months of pressure from China and South Korea on Washington to invest in the economic reconstruction of North Korea, ravaged by almost a century of oppressive communist rule. "We did discuss that", Trump said.
