A new study conducted in Sweded found that people who sleep in on weekends avoid dying young

Weekends are my saving grace - I wake up at 4 a.m. during the week, and I have zero qualms about sleeping until 10 on the weekends (or as late as my children allow).

Sleep expert Michael Grandner explains it this way: Most people who are considered "short sleepers" are probably just shy of getting seven hours. The researchers also found that people who slept for eight hours or more every day had a 25% higher mortality rate compared to those who managed six or seven hours a night. Now, a new study suggests a solution: You can actually "catch up" on the health benefits of sleep you missed during the week over the weekend.

Differences between weekend and weekday sleep were most pronounced at a young age.

Torbjörn Åkerstedt, a professor and director of the Stress Research Institute at Stockholm University told CNN he was quite surprised by the findings on sleep during off days. Lack of sleep can have dire consequences for your health. For the sleep-deprived, sleeping in on a weekend is like eating a salad after a series of hamburger dinners - healthier, sure, but from "one perspective the damage is done". A cohort of 43,880 subjects was followed for 13 years through record‐linkages.

Champions League final: Zidane to start Bale, Benzema, Ronaldo against Liverpool
The Welshman scored the 2014 Champions League victor for the Los Blancos but started from the bench in the 2017 final at Cardiff. Ronaldo is bidding to join a group of players who have won the European Cup five times, including former Real great Di Stefano.

Researchers took various factors into account which affect mortality, such as gender, education, body mass index, severe disease, use of hypnotics (like sleeping pills, ) plus things like smoking, alcohol intake, physical activity, coffee intake and employment status. The individuals were restricted to 4.67 hours of sleep for each 20-hour time period, which is the equivalent to sleeping around 5.5 hours in a 24-hour day.

On the flip side, those who slept more than eight hours a night had higher mortality rates as well. That was compared to those who slept seven hours a night.

It's not so much about being able to store up sleep, but he thinks short sleepers who are changing their habits on the weekends are making up for some of what they lost during the week. It is otherwise impractical to accumulate data at such a scale. That, Dr Akerstedt said, was perhaps because older individuals got the sleep they needed.
