Astronaut Alan Bean, 4th human to walk on moon, has died, NASA announces

Alan Bean the 4th person to walk on the moon dies at 86

"A native Texans, Alan died peacefully in Houston surrounded by those who loved him".

Leslie Bean, Alan Bean's wife of 40 years, said her husband was the strongest and kindest man she ever knew.

Bean was a Navy test pilot before being selected to become an astronaut in 1963.

Astronaut-artist Alan Bean speaks at the 2009 opening of an exhibit titled "Alan Bean: Painting Apollo, First Artist on Another World" at the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum in Washington.

After Apollo, Bean commanded the second Skylab mission in 1973 - orbiting the Earth for 59 days. "And for years, Alan and I never missed a month where we did not have a cheeseburger together at Miller's Café in Houston", Cunningham said.

Apollo 17's Harrison Schmitt, the only professional scientist to walk on the moon, praised the contribution that Bean and Conrad made to lunar geology.

In November 1969, he was the lunar module pilot on Apollo 12, the second Apollo mission to successfully land on the moon.

Bean's passing means only four of the 12 Apollo moonwalkers are still alive, with a string of lunar landing anniversaries due to begin next year.

Landslide Irish vote repeals restrictive abortion amendment
Love them at every stage of life". "You may feel that the country has taken the wrong turn, is no longer a country you recognize. Majority Catholic Ireland is now in a heated debate over legalizing pregnancy termination, which is banned under current laws.

Reflecting on his experience, Bean once said: "I remember once looking back at Earth and starting to think, Gee, that's lovely.' Then I said to myself, 'Quit screwing off and go collect rocks.' We figured reflection wasn't productive".

They spent about 7 hours and 45 minutes completing two moonwalks in which they deployed instruments to study the moon's geology, installed a nuclear generator to power future experimental equipment and collected an extensive assortment of moon rocks.

"As all great explorers are, Alan was a boundary pusher", NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine said in a statement that credited Bean with being part of 11 world records in the areas of space and aeronautics.

Bean retired from the Navy in 1975 and NASA in 1981. "The other half, the ones that were more right-brain, thought it was a pretty good idea".

Bean was born in 1932, in Wheeler, Texas, and received a Bachelor of Science degree in aeronautical engineering from the University of Texas in 1955.

Back in 1998, Mr Bean described his preparation for the moon landing as "Christmas and your birthday rolled into one", adding: "I mean, can you think of anything better?"

He is survived by his wife, a sister and two children from a prior marriage, a daughter Amy Sue and son, Clay. "We're really here. That's the Earth up there.' And I said it two or three times to myself".
