Tropical storm 2018: Florida faces heavy rain from Alberto within days | Daily Star
The National Hurricane Center said Friday that a low pressure system in the northwestern Caribbean Sea has become better defined overnight and could be a tropical depression or storm by Saturday.
With maximum sustained winds of 40 mphs, it was moving to north at about 13 miles per hour, according to the Hurricane Center.
The storm is situated roughly 100 miles (160 km) south-east of Cozumel, Mexico.
The storm is forecast to come closest to South Florida late Saturday night and early Sunday morning - although it will remain well out in the Gulf of Mexico. A tropical storm watch is in place from the New Orleans area to the Aucilla River in the Florida panhandle. Cuba maintained its tropical storm watch for the province of Pinar del Rio, while Mexico cancelled its watch for the resort-dotted coast of the Yucatan peninsula, where the storm brought heavy rain.
Gov. Phil Bryant signed a proclamation Saturday morning declaring a state of emergency ahead of Alberto's landfall. A gradual strengthening was expected through the weekend as it moves north.
The storm is still a "broad, stationary surface low-pressure system" just off the Yucatán, the National Hurricane Center says. Isolated tornadoes were also possible.

He later added he is not satisfied with the current state of trade talks with China. "So well see what happens", he said.
A flash flood watch has been posted for parts of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and large areas of Florida.
US National Hurricane Centre said the storm now has winds of 40mph (65kph), but this is expected to rise significantly.
Flood watches have already been established all throughout Alabama and Georgia, the National Hurricane Center reported.

The waves of heavy rain and the potential for storms carries over into Memorial Day.
