Several Memorial Day 2018 events planned in Grand Rapids area
Operation Flags for Vets: Volunteers sought to place flags on approximately 77,000 gravesites at Massachusetts National Cemetery.
10 a.m. - Keeler-Adams American Legion Post 1168 will hold a Memorial Day service at the Edgewood Cemetery, weather permitting. Bring lawn chairs to the ceremony.
Commerce City will hold its 54th annual Memorial Day Parade on Monday at 10 a.m. Tribute will be paid to veterans interred at sea.
Monday - American Legion Harvey Funk Post 494, Caledonia, will conduct Memorial Day services with a rifle salute at these cemeteries: McPherson Cemetery, 7100 block of Highway K, Raymond, 9 a.m.; Oak Grove Cemetery, Highway G and 76th Street, Raymond, 9:15 a.m.; St. Louis Cemetery, 13207 Highway G, Caledonia, 9:30 a.m.; Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, 7 Mile and Nicholson roads, Caledonia, 10 a.m.; Caledonia Memorial Cemetery, 6800 block of Nicholson Road, Caledonia, 10:30 a.m.; Caledonia-Mount Pleasant Memorial Park, highways K and H, Caledonia, 11 a.m.; Harvey Funk Post 494, 4700 block of Highway 41 (East Frontage Road), Caledonia, 11:30 a.m. Military personnel will stand at attention in one-hour shifts throughout 24-hour period.
This year's event will begin Sunday at 1 p.m., kicking off from the corner of 72nd Street and Grand Avenue. Keynote speaker will be retired Lt. Col. Ralph Negron, a career Marine infantry officer who served in Vietnam. Everyone is asked to help place miniature American flags on the graves at the conclusion of the program. The parade will travel down Main Street. Coralville American Legion Post 721 will hold the service, which is free and open to the public.
The neighborhood's Memorial Day festivities will actually begin a day early this year, as Our Lady of Mercy in Forest Hills will host a Mass for deceased military members on Saturday at 5 p.m.

There will also be church services at the cemeteries on Memorial Day and flags will line the cemetery courtesy of the VFW. Afterward, the parade will return to the American Legion post. It is sponsored by the Pricetown Church of Christ and is free to everyone.
The annual Memorial Day parade steps off from Hood Commons at 11 a.m. and ends at MacGregor Park on East Broadway where traditional services will follow. Organized by community leaders Joe Manners and Felix Diaz, the event will begin at 11 a.m.at the cemetery located at 1414 Olive St.in Oro Grande.
