Holiday travel up? AAA: Yes Gas Buddy: No

CA gas prices are highest in nation ahead of Memorial Day

Gas prices spike before travel-heavy Memorial Day weekend, but travelers so far are undeterred

A heads up for drivers: if you're taking a road trip this holiday weekend, it's going to cost more to fill up.

"Compared to an average of the last three Memorial Day weekends, pump prices are almost 50 cents more expensive and climbing", Jeanette Casselano, a AAA spokesperson, said earlier this week.

Technology and travel apps can put motorists on the right path over the Memorial Day weekend, but there are no guarantees they will solve all the hassles of higher gas prices and 3 million Texans hitting the road.

Despite a 50 cent increase per gallon in gas prices compared to past year, about 64 percent of vacation-goers plan to drive instead of fly this summer travel season, according to AAA spokesperson Julie Hall. In the same survey, 39 percent said gas prices will affect their summer travel decisions, compared to 19 percent in 2017. AAA says holiday travel will be up about five percent, even with gas prices at their highest this weekend since 2014. That's about an increase of a penny since last week, but still well below the record price of $4.70 set in October 2012. "And I really don't care which state I'm in - I still have to buy gas, and the gas companies are going to raise the prices".

As of Thursday, the national average was $2.96 per gallon, making a 15-gallon tank fuel-up almost $9 more than 2017 prices.

Over the last three years, the price of gas nationally has averaged about $2.47, with regional commuters paying an average of 64 cents over the national average during that same time.

United States staffer suffers brain injury after 'sound' incident in China
Unlike their American counterparts, however, no Canadian envoy reported hearing any suspicious sound prior to falling ill. The spokeswoman added that the Chinese government is also investigating the matter.

Rising prices of crude oil, high demand for fuel and maintenance work needing to be done at refineries - some of which was delayed because of last year's Hurricane Harvey - are among the suspected causes of the hikes.

"OPEC is cutting back on oil production, as are Russian Federation and other countries", McTeague said.

State police are also participating in Operation CARE, which stands for Crash Awareness and Reduction Effort, according to a Wednesday state police news release.

"It was getting frantic for a while this morning, people are just ringing off the hook", RV Northwest employee Veronica Spickler said.

AAA said it is a good idea to get cars inspected before hitting the road. "All of these can be easily addressed before the holiday weekend, but the time to act is now". "But no matter how you count these tragic incidents, there are just too many", he said.
