Texans On Both Sides Of Gun Debate Agree On Safe Storage, But Not On How To Support It

After yet another school shooting, Americans are once again seeking explanations - while many ignore the most obvious one. "Even the young people from Santa Fe are not full-throated advocates of gun control to keep the children safe". Mourners gathered at white wooden crosses planted in front of the school, with a victim's name and a red heart on each cross.

Texas, a conservative stronghold, has some of the most permissive firearm laws in the United States, and new gun restrictions are unlikely.

One Santa Fe school police officer who responded to the attack was shot and remained in critical condition Sunday, according to the University of Texas Medical Branch. Tuesday's inaugural session focused on school districts arming teachers and better tracking student mental health.

Reuters reported that state officials are likely to consider installing additional security at schools and implement screenings to assess whether students have mental health issues. So will Texas Gun Sense, which promotes common-sense reforms to prevent violence.

"We need to have a national background check system that is uniformed with real teeth and real consequences for those that try to defeat it in trying to get guns and for those that sell guns to the wrong people", Acevedo told NPR's Lulu Garcia-Navarro.

Tisdale said his mother "enjoyed helping others so much" that she made a decision to work as a substitute teacher for children with special needs.

Gov. Greg Abbott called for a moment of silence across Texas at 10 a.m. local time, to honor the memory of those who died in Friday's violence in the city of 12,000 between Houston and Galveston.

In so doing, he pledged to seek ways to prevent more school shootings like the one Friday at a high school in Santa Fe, about 30 miles (50 kilometers) southeast of Houston. So much for MA gun control.

Abbott says everyone shares a "common goal - to protect innocent lives".

Abbott and Texas Republicans have embraced a steady relaxation of gun laws in recent years.

Ten roses are left in memory of the victims killed in a shooting at the Santa Fe High School in Santa Fe, Texas, U.S., May 20, 2018.

"She worked at the school not out of necessity but for the love of teaching and helping others", he said.

Authorities say a 17-year-old student carried out the attack.

Pagourtzis's family said in a statement it was "saddened and dismayed" by the shooting and "as shocked as anyone else" by the events. His voice cracks as he describes how he told police to let him inside the school so his son could kill him instead.

A statewide moment of silence was held in the morning to remember the eight students and two teachers killed.

"There's nothing wrong with reasonable, pragmatic (gun) restrictions", Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said at a news conference. John Whitmire, a Houston Democrat and chair of the Senate's Criminal Justice Committee, both echoed Patrick's optimism after the meeting and were happy with numerous proposals.
