Earlier in May, President Donald Trump announced the US decision to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal of 2015.

The United States' top diplomat's statement comes just days after he had threatened to impose the "strongest sanctions in history" against Iran if the country's leadership did not change the course of its foreign and domestic policy and laid out a 12-point list of demands for Tehran to comply with.

Trump announced on May 8 that Washington was walking away from the nuclear agreement, which was reached between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council - the US, Britain, France, Russia and China - plus Germany - in 2015. He asked Europe to "make up for that silence" and to "stand up against United States sanctions".
