The police's action of opening fire on protesters has come under heavy criticism from several quarters, with many even demanding that the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami-led government step down.

The head of the national opposition Congress party, Rahul Gandhi, condemned the use of lethal force, calling it "a brutal example of state-sponsored terrorism".

Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government on Wednesday ordered a probe by former Madras High Court judge Aruna Jagadeesan into the violence that killed 11 people in Thoothukudi during protests against the Sterlite Copper Smelting plant.

On Tuesday, a crowd waving black flags stormed the district government headquarters and an apartment block for Vedanta employees, a company official said, declining to be named for fear of being targeted.

"Yes, the situation is tense but it is under control", a senior police officer said.
