Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen testifies during a hearing held by the Senate Judiciary Committee
The White House declined specific comment on whether Trump berated Nielsen, her assumed resignation letter and on whether Trump maintained confidence in Nielsen, who shot at DHS in December.
"The @nytimes article alleging that the Secretary drafted a resignation letter yesterday and was close to resigning is false", tweetedHomeland Security spokesman Tyler Houlton. A recent target of the president has been a migrant caravan traveling from South America to the USA border.
"We should fold all of the TPS people that have been here for a considerable period of time and find a way for them to be on a path to citizenship", Kelly, one of US President Donald Trump's top aides, said. Rather than direct her ire at the President, Nielsen used her platform to express her frustration with Congress and its lack of action in dealing with the issue.
Trump's entire cabinet reportedly bore witness to the scolding, which the Times says made up just a portion of a long rant about how the administration on the whole was falling short of its stated goal to tighten border security and curb illegal immigration.
Trump lashed out at his Cabinet, and Nielsen in particular, when told that the number of people arrested for illegally crossing the Mexico border topped 50,000 for the second consecutive month.
In a statement, Nielsen said she meant to "continue to direct the department to do all we can to implement the president's security-focused agenda". More recently, however, those numbers have climbed back toward the level they were in the final years of the Obama administration-an intolerable equivalence for Trump. One person close to Nielsen said she is miserable in her job.
During the meeting, Trump yelled about the United States' porous border and said more needed to be done to fix it. According to the Times, the president had viewed Nielsen and other D.H.S. officials as resistant to the family-separation policy, but the West Wing ultimately won out. At the meeting, both Nielsen and Attorney General Jeff Sessions tried in vain to explain to Donald Trump that the federal government can not completely shut down the border.
Jeff Sessions and Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen had to explain to Trump that he didn't have the power to completely shut down the border. Trump went on a Twitter tear, writing that he'd told Nielsen to block the migrants from entering the U.S.
"We'll work in conjunction with the governors who are in fact on the front lines to see what they need and work it within the National Guard", Nielsen told reporters during a White House Press briefing at the time.
Kelly said that while most illegal immigrants "are not bad people. they're also not people that would easily assimilate" into modern American society.
According to the New York Times'report, Trump has been angry that Nielsen has been "resisting his direction that parents be separated from their children when families cross illegally into the United States".
