China's first domestically built aircraft carrier begins maiden sea trial
The aircraft carrier "Liaoning", created on the basis of the modified cruiser "Varyag" - Soviet production, has become like for Shandong.
The new carrier will be capable of transporting about 40 aircraft, and is reportedly modeled on the first, and now only Chinese aircraft carrier in active service, the Liaoning, a re-purposed Soviet aircraft carrier, put into service in 2012. Liaoning's propulsion system being in relatively good condition when the aircraft carrier was acquired, the Chinese engineers were able to re-use most of its design while making necessary improvements on the few original design defects.
The carrier set out from Dalian in northeast Liaoning province, according to China's state-run news agency, Xinhua.
But China made a decision to built a second STOBAR carrier in the meantime, given the geopolitical tensions.
Chinese President Xi Jinping is overseeing an ambitious plan to update the armed forces as China ramps up its presence in the disputed South China Sea.
China only has one aircraft carrier (pictured, the ship at its 2007 launch), which is called the Liaoning.
The new carrier's name and hull code remain unknown, as the PLA usually only makes public such information when a ship is commissioned.
The new carrier has a conventional propulsion system.
Experts have said that the new carrier will have missions that differ from those of the Liaoning, which is mainly tasked with testing equipment and weapons and training personnel. The US has 11 carriers, all nuclear-powered. Little is known about this new commander but unofficial sources indicate that LAI is "very intelligent" and has a "very good level in English".
China has sent its first home-built aircraft carrier for sea trials as the Communist government attempts to assert its military might on the world stage.
The photos and videos released this morning also allow us to see that the anti-frogman grenade launching system of the second Chinese aircraft carrier has evolved from eight tubes to twelve tubes per system. They said the vessel has more than 3,600 cabins, noting that during construction, there would be at least 3,000 workers from across the country working on the ship each day. About 3,000 workers from across the country worked on the ship on a daily basis. For example, the new ship's island is shorter and the landing section is longer.
Officials still have not named the 50,000-ton carrier.
