Alexander Zverev beats Dominic Thiem for Madrid title

Kevin Anderson was eliminated by Dominic Thiem.

Anderson made it to his first Masters 1000 semi-final, on his 11 attempt, with a 7-6 (3), 3-6, 6-3 victory over Dusan Lajovic on Friday.

He was stopped, however, going down 4-6 2-6 to Austrian fifth seed Dominic Thiem in their semifinal match.

Alexander Zverev capped a ideal week at the Madrid Open in Spain with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Austrian Dominic Thiem on Sunday to earn his third ATP title. Having said this, it's hard to give much respect to this record - on three occasions, Zverev was ranked outside the top 40, and Zverev has never played Thiem as a top 20 player.

Asked if he feels at that level, the German replied: 'Rafa is the favorite no matter where he plays on a clay court.

"Winning two titles in two weeks is great".

Shapovalov framed a forehand at 30-30 to offer the first break point of the match and Zverev pounced with a crunching backhand return his opponent fended into the net.

Thiem hopes to win his second title of the year and his 10th title of his career.

The season will continue with the Italian Open tomorrow.

Swansea City Set To Part Company With Yet Another Manager
The crestfallen Swansea players were in marked contrast to Southampton's jubilant celebrations at the final whistle. This was a man who broke down barriers in terms of prejudice with his grace, poise and skill on the pitch.

Before the tournament started, Thiem sounded confident in his chances if he faced Nadal.

Thiem won again on clay in 2016, defeating the German in the final in Nice in the run-up to the French Open in three sets 6-4 3-6 6-0.

Having not lost a set yet in the ongoing tournament, he will be hoping to better his record against Thiem.

Thiem said he is feeling stronger after his ankle injury as he builds up to the French Open later this month and has tried to forget recent losses to Nadal in Monte Carlo and his shock exit at the hands of Greek teenager Stefanos Tsitsipas in Barcelona.

"But, you know, after 14 years being in the position that I have been fighting for, important things, I can lose, I can win". Thiem is a confident player right now and has a shot at the biggest title of his career at 24 years old.

Anderson won the first six matchups against Thiem on a hard court before Saturday's match on clay. "Now I'm in the finals again, which is unbelievable for me.".

"I think I placed myself in a good position".

I'm ignoring the head to head numbers and backing Zverev to win his third Masters 1000 title.
