Paris police officers evacuated people from some buildings in the Right Bank neighbourhood after the attack.

"Just before 9pm, we saw people rushing inside the restaurant screaming that a man was inside with a bloody knife, ' a witness called Laurent told Le Parisien newspaper".

French police have been criticized in the past for failing to prevent attacks.

Prime Minister Edouard Philippe said police were on the scene five minutes after an emergency call and the assailant was killed within nine minutes of beginning the attack.

No information on the identity of the attacker was given.

"The bartenders told us to come inside very quickly". A buddy got here to her help and the attacker left, "hitting on all of the doorways, all of the retailers", the witness informed BFM.

"All my thoughts are with the victims and wounded of the knife attack perpetrated in Paris tonight, as well as their loved ones", he added.

The mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo expressed his condolences to the relatives of the deceased and wounded, saying that all Parisians feel sorry for them.

France has been on high alert amid a series of attacks commissioned or inspired by the Islamic State militant group that have killed more than 240 people since 2015.
