Nina Compton, Cure win James Beard Awards

Dolester Miles has been making desserts at Highlands Bar & Grill Bottega and Chez Fonfon for more than 30 years

In this year's culinary categories (excluding service, design, wine and so forth), 11 of 15 awards went to chefs who are women, or people of color, or both. Kaysen competed against two other Minneapolis chefs - Steven Brown of Tilia and Ann Kim of Young Joni - as well as two chefs from Milwaukee. The menu changes daily at chef Frank Stitt's Birmingham restaurant, which is rooted in classic French cooking techniques.

Compton was a finalist in this category in each of the last two years.

Gavin Kaysen is the chef/owner of Spoon and Stable in Minneapolis and Bellecour in Wayzata and now the James Beard Foundation's Best Chef in the Midwest.

The Best New Restaurant award was presented to Seattle's JuneBaby, and Gabrielle Hamilton of New York's Prune restaurant took home the award for Outstanding Chef.

Camille Cogswell, pastry chef at Zahav in Old City, was nominated for rising star chef.

North Carolina chefs have a history of winning James Beard Awards.
