Temperatures in Northolt, west London, reached 28.7C (83.6F), making it the hottest early May bank holiday weekend on record, the Met Office said.

The BBC weather forecaster added temperatures could rocket to 29C in west London.

"Fortunately there's still a lot of sunshine in the forecast".

Temperatures are expected to soar to 28C in parts of England as the three-day weekend draws to a close.

Met Office forecaster Charlie Powell said the highs of 28C were not going to be widespread, with the scorching temperatures being the "exception rather than the rule".

Temperatures are predicted to reach as high as 29 degrees Celsius in some parts of England.

The South East and central southern England enjoyed the best of the sunshine, with most of the United Kingdom experiencing temperatures between 23C (73.4F) and 27C (80.6F).

A forecast on the Met Office website reads: "Bank Holiday Monday promises to be another very warm day, with plenty of sunshine".

Low cloud, mist and sea fog is affecting the northern coast of Devon and Cornwall.

And students at Cambridge University made the most of the sunshine as they dressed up, stripped off and played drinking games.

"If we see things really warm up it's likely to mean millions more cars on the road, which is bound to cause queues on popular routes".

He said: "Swathes of Britain are about to enjoy a warm and settled Bank Holiday weekend".

He said: 'It should be a relatively easy journey in terms of the impacts from weather'.

Sunday saw highs of 26C in Heathrow, and Scotland and Northern Ireland had their hottest day of the year so far, with Edinburgh recording temperatures of 22.3C and Katesbridge 21C.

Leading bookmaker Coral is slashed odds to 10-11 that this month ends as the hottest May on record in the UK.
