A Manchester United spokesman said, "Sir Alex Ferguson has undergone emergency surgery for a brain haemorrhage".

United confirmed the 76-year-old's situation in a statement on Saturday after reports had begun circulating that he was in intensive care.

"I wish Sir Alex Ferguson a speedy and full recovery", said British Labour MP John McDonnell, the Shadow Chancellor.

People who know him have stressed how much he has been enjoying a varied life among family and friends. Hopefully the surgery was good and can recover as quick as possible to return to his family, wife and kids, and his Manchester United family'.

He was at United's home ground a week ago to present a commemorative vase to old rival Arsene Wenger, who is stepping down as Arsenal manager.
