Trump Says Time, Place Set For Meeting With North Korean Leader

The time difference has actually complicated interactions between North and South Korea. The White House said it did not have any announcements to deliver on Friday morning after Trump spoke.

Earlier this week, Trump expressed a preference for holding the "big event" with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in the demilitarized zone or DMZ between the two Koreas.

"I think a lot of good things are going to be happening over the next short period of time", he said.

The White House hasn't said whether Trump is willing to place USA troop levels on the negotiating table when he meets with Kim.

North Korea is changing its time zone to match the South after last week's inter-Korean summit, according to its state media.

Speaking about the summit, Mr Trump said: "We now have a date and we have a location".

Bolton's repudiation came a day after a New York Times article reported that Trump was looking for options to scale back the number of USA troops in South Korea.

NASA's InSight spacecraft is about to blast off for Mars
The launch pattern from the West Coast requires the rocket to burn a bit more fuel to deliver the craft on its proper trajectory. Originally scheduled for 2016, the discovery of several flaws in one of the instruments forced NASA to postpone the mission.

Meanwhile, Trump also disputed a published report that he had asked the Pentagon to present a plan for the withdrawal or reduction of US forces stationed in South Korea, saying such a move was "not on the table".

US National Security Advisor John Bolton earlier denied as "utter nonsense" a New York Times report saying Trump had asked the Pentagon for options to prepare for drawing down the 28,500-strong US force.

But the rapidly evolving peace process with the North has led to suggestions that US troops might not be needed if a treaty is signed.

On Thursday, Vice President Mike Pence postponed a planned trip to Brazil at the end of May to free up resources for Trump's meeting with Kim. But the official acknowledged that Trump has publicly expressed frustrations at the cost and size of the United States presence there, and said the issue would have to be addressed eventually.

But for Trump to contemplate withdrawing troops now would be a quixotic move as he enters into negotiations with Kim whose demands and intentions are uncertain.

Plans for a Trump-Kim summit follow months of tense saber-rattling over Pyongyang's testing of atomic weapons and long-range missiles, including some theoretically capable of reaching the American mainland.
