Trump: There was no collusion and is no obstruction of justice

Special counsel Robert Mueller is surrounded by police and security after briefing members of the Senate on his Russia

Michael D'Antonio, the Trump biographer who authored "Never Enough: Donald Trump and the Pursuit of Success", has written a piece for CNN in which he claims that special counsel Robert Mueller has Trump right where he wants him, as evidenced by the leaked questions that he allegedly wants to ask the president. The questions were leaked to the New York Times. AP's Eric Tucker gives context to this latest development in the story about the Russian Federation investigation.

The questions include ones about Trump's motivation behind some of his most incendiary comments on Twitter, where he often attacks the investigation and political opponents, but most more broadly focus on allegations Trump has obstructed justice by trying to thwart Mueller's probe.

"Oh, I have a made up, phony crime, Collusion, that never existed, and an investigation begun with illegally leaked classified information".

Jim Schultz, a former Trump White House lawyer, saw a "downside" to making the questions public, because it will be hard for Mueller to narrow the scope of the investigation. Trump has been accused of possibly obstructing of justice when he allegedly asked Comey in a private oval office meeting to drop a criminal probe into then national security advisor Mike Flynn.

Flynn was sacked February 13, 2017, after White House officials said he had misled them about his Russian contacts during the transition period by saying that he had not discussed sanctions.

The New York Times is reporting that the special counsel investigating Russian election meddling and obstruction of justice has given President Donald Trump's lawyers a list of nearly four dozen questions.

Trump did suggest to the Russian ambassador that he had gotten rid of Comey to end the Russia investigation.

Despite Mr Trump's insistence, there appears to be plenty of interest in possible collusion.

The Times report said Mueller's team wants to probe Trump's thinking about issues that occurred during the campaign, in the almost three months between the election and his assuming power in January 2017 and during his 15 months in office.

"The trouble with this shock-and-awe tactic is that President Trump is not a sober-minded man", he explains.

"What efforts were made to reach out to Mr. Flynn about seeking immunity or possible pardon?" "He was insane, a real nut job", Trump told the Russians.

Just ask Martha Stewart, who went to jail for obstructing a federal investigation into insider trading, or Scooter Libby, who was convicted of obstructing a special counsel investigation into White House leaks of a covert Central Intelligence Agency operative's name.

Mueller has brought several charges against Manafort, but none are for any crimes related to Russian election interference during the 2016 campaign.
