New details emerged on the rift between White House chief of staff John Kelly and President Donald Trump, with one former administration official saying Kelly privately called Trump "an idiot" a year ago.

According to the report, "He has referred to Trump as "an idiot" multiple times to underscore his point, according to four officials who say they've witnessed the comments". NBC sources say that Kelly was systematically created an image of "Savior of the Fatherland", who is forced to restrain the impulses of the impulsive President.

"I spend more time with the president than anyone else and we have an incredibly candid and strong relationship", said Kelly in a statement.

Moreover, the staff of NBC to continue to claim that he relied in his publication on numerous and reliable sources. Kelly, who has cast himself as safeguarding the public from the president, has also threatened to quit the White House on several occasions.

But things seem to have come to a head today as headlines broke about Kelly calling Trump "an idiot".

Along with Kelly, the president also is considering former Congressman Jeff Miller, R-Florida, and Anthony Tersigni, the president and chief executive of Ascension, the Journal reports. Beschloss said the closest similarity would be President Ronald Reagan's chief of staff during his second term, Don Regan, who "somewhat looked down on" his boss and eventually lost the support of the staff and the president.

Not only did Schiller and the other two men reportedly take all of Bornstein's Trump-related paperwork away with them, they also apparently asked the doctor to take down a photo he had hanging that showed the doctor and new president together.

Kelly told senior national security officials in what appeared to be a "moment of frustration" in the last month that he believed the President was becoming "unhinged", according to the senior administration official. During the rally, which one person likened to a trial, Trump called Lewandowski on stage and praised him for not being a "pushover" or a "patsy".

The White House spokespeople conceded that Trump gets frustrated at times with Kelly, particularly when he feels Kelly is not giving him all the information he needs and wants.

"Once a Marine, always a Marine, [he] would not tolerate anyone disrespecting the commander in chief", the staffer said of Kelly, a retired Marine Corps general.

The situation is similar to when reports surfaced that then-Secretary of State Rex Tillerson called Trump a "moron".

Trump's anger about that remark - the president believed it insulted his intelligence and made him look like a flip-flopper on a signature campaign issue - was "the beginning of the end" for Kelly, according to several Trump confidants.
