Canadiens own third overall pick in June

Rasmus Dahlin skates for Team Sweden at the 2018 World Juniors

The Canadiens won the No. 3 pick in the 2018 NHL Draft lottery, but they might not hang onto it. The Buffalo Sabres followed a season filled with losses by finally winning something - the National Hockey League draft lottery - and landing the No. 1 pick for just third time in franchise history.

In 2014 and 2015 the Sabres had the best odds to win the lottery but things didn't bounce their way. "So it narrows the scope a bit where you say if we move up to this spot, we can get this player who's a good fit for the group of prospects that we have".

WBFO's Mark Scott talks with our Sabres analyst Bill Hoppe about this potentially monumental weekend in Buffalo sports history.

Carolina will select second overall while Montreal will select third.

The draft takes place June 22-23 in Dallas.

Swedish defenceman Rasmus Dahlin is the consensus No. 1 pick for this year's draft.

Broncos expected to explore trade from No. 5 to No. 2 pick
Here's hoping that Denver can capture the same fire and production with Bradley Chubb that they did with Von Miller. The Denver Broncos selected defensive end Bradley Chubb with the No. 5 pick of the 2018 draft Thursday night.

The Buffalo Sabres have an 18.5 percent chance of winning the No. 1 pick. The 18-year-old was named the best defenseman at the World Juniors in Buffalo earlier this year.

The Hurricanes are in a state of flux under new team owner Tom Dundon. And Dahlin also had an assist in two games at the Pyeongchang Olympics in February.

Carolina is searching for a general manager after Ron Francis was reassigned to another front-office position last season.

The 15 National Hockey League teams that did not qualify for the Stanley Cup postseason participated in the lottery, which was held in Toronto. Islanders (from Calgary Flames), 13.

The Flyers also received Jori Lehtera and the Blues' first-round pick previous year in the Schenn trade. The lottery has again benefitted the Flyers, who don't have to wait another year for the additional first-round pick.
