Shock: There weren't too many people expecting a Red Bull win in China after Ferrari had dominated Saturday with a decisive front row lockout but Daniel Ricciardo put on an overtaking clinic during the race to claim a shock victory over Formula One's frontrunners.
Whilst that was happening Ricciardo, who also managed to set the fastest lap of the race, was on the hunt, and he easily took Sebastian Vettel, as the Ferrari struggled to cope with the pace of the Red Bull.
The opening stint of the Chinese Grand Prix was largely free of drama, with Vettel on course for his third win in as many races this season. Max Verstappen has already come under fire this season for his over-aggressive driving style and once again it was on full display. Ricciardo gained ground after pitting under the safety vehicle, switching to softs while the top runners stayed out with mediums.
Red Bull assessed their options.
For Ricciardo, he finally had reason to celebrate after he just missed a podium spot at home in Australia following a grid penalty, and had to retire in Bahrain due to mechanical problems.
Nevertheless, he still leaves Shanghai with a nine point lead in the drivers' standings.
Verstappen, ahead on the road, was best-placed to make the most of the turn of events, but he ran off track when trying an unrealistic move on Hamilton and then got it all wrong when he hit Vettel at the hairpin while trying to recover.

It was Bottas' win until Ricciardo - rightfully hailed as the master of late braking - stormed past the Finn in an inch ideal move on lap 46, in what will surely go down as one of the classic F1 drives. That's why I sent Chris Gent - the No. 1 mechanic on Daniel's vehicle - up (to the podium) today because those guys have earned us that result. Verstappen meanwhile was given a 10s penalty for causing that collision.
"It's so close between Red Bull, Ferrari and us", he said.
Nico Hulkenberg of Renault was sixth followed by Fernando Alonso of McLaren.
Further down the field, Vettel was obviously suffering with a damaged vehicle, as Fernando Alonso squeezed past the German on lap 55 to take seventh place, with the Ferrari driver complaining of having been pushed off the track.
"Daniel has been clinical in the way that he's executed that race. (We were) thankful for a few incidents ahead that kept us in the battle". "This was not what I expected". I didn't want to compromise my race.
The Finnish driver got ahead of Vettel and it looked like the race would boil down to the Ferrari driver saving his tyres for a big push to overtake the Mercedes driver before the end of the race. "That is racing. These things happen". "Sometimes you've just got to lick the stamp and send it", explained the Australian.
