A major storm will bring blizzard conditions, over a foot of snow, severe weather, and fire danger for millions
Expect blowing and drifting snow, reducing visibility as you travel towards Kansas and Nebraska. North winds gusting as high as 45 miles per hour will drive the snow, causing white-out conditions at times, the forecast indicates.
Travel across much of Nebraska was still near-impossible Saturday afternoon, with road closures on Interstate 80, US 30 and USA 20.
For state road and travel conditions call the Kansas Department of Transportation at 511 from any phone. The watch stretched through parts of Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Texas.
Our next storm system looks to move into western Colorado by Thursday night, bringing heavy snow to the mountains for the start of the day on Friday. The school said on its Facebook page that students were evacuated from an all-female freshman dormitory after its roof was damaged. Police said no injuries were reported.
Nobles Cooperative Electric says the storm destroyed dozens of transmission line poles near Interstate 90 early Friday.
The Telegraph will continue to report on the weather as new information develops. Adjacent areas in Nebraska, north into South Dakota will also experience blizzard conditions.
If you stay home, it is a good idea to make sure your home emergency kit is well-stocked, too, due to the possibility of power failures.
In South Dakota, where a blizzard warning covered much of the state, authorities issued no-travel advisories for many highways and closed much of Interstate 90 in the western half of the state. Total snow accumulations of 4 to 6 inches, with localized amounts up to 8 inches, are expected. Rapid City had already received 5.5 inches by 10 a.m.
Winnie Madikizela Mandela's 81 years as a mother of a nation
