Chennai: The stage is all set for India to launch its navigation satellite IRNSS-1I from Sriharikota rocket port on Thursday, a senior Indian space agency official said.
ISRO Chairman Dr K Sivan after the launch said, "I am extremely happy to announce that the 8th navigation satellite of India was launched successfully into the NAVIC constellation".
The Rubidium atomic clocks are part of the navigation payload of the satellite, while the ranging payload consists of a C-band transponder, which facilitates accurate determination of the range of the satellite and it also carries Corner Cube Retroreflectors for Laser ranging.
The NAVIC, an acronym for "Navigation with Indian Constellation" is the operational name for the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS) which is created to be equivalent to the Global Positioning System (GPS) owned by the US.
The 1,425-kg satellite made by Bengaluru-headquartered Alpha Design Technologies, in collaboration with Isro, is the second satellite to be actively built by private industry. However, the IRNSS-1H satellite launch mission ended in a failure on August 31 past year.
Congratulating the entire ISRO community for this wonderful achievement, Dr Sivan saidthe PSLV-C41 was the 43rd PSLV mission. "Similarly, the IRNSS-1I satellite will be put in a particular location", he added. The spacecraft's other two clocks failed over the next six months, leaving it unable to broadcast navigation data.
Like its predecessors, IRNSS-1I carried two types of payloads: Navigation and Ranging. The objective of these IRNSS satellites is to create India's own navigation system which would be in the lines of US' GPS or Global Positioning System. Though the rocket placed GSAT-6A in orbit, the ISRO lost communication with the satellite.
"We have a lot more missions on the anvil". He said the space agency will be making high throughput satellites that weigh less but give the output of a heavier satellite.
The introduction of friction stir welding is "going to improve the productivity and also enhance the payload capability of the vehicle", Sivan said.
"As of now, the (IRNSS 1I) satellite is doing well", said M. Annadurai, director of the ISRO Satellite Center.
In October or November, India plans to launch the Chandrayaan 2 mission, a combined lunar orbiter, lander and rover, on a GSLV Mk.2.
