Volkswagen flags potential major management changes

As Diesel Scandal Fades, VW Is Planning to Replace Its CEO

The Associated Press reports the automaker said it was looking at a reshuffle of management and responsibilities, and German news media is reporting Muller's position could go to VW brand head Herbert Diess.

On the basis of these considerations, the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft is now in discussions with certain members of the Supervisory Board and of the Board of Management.

Volkswagen said that talks were "currently open" and that Mueller "showed his willingness to contribute" to the changes. The German state of Lower Saxony has 20 percent and Qatar Holding 17 percent.

Mr Mueller had been appointed in 2015 in the aftermath of the diesel scandal and was contracted to be in charge until 2020 although he had commented on being frustrated with the pace of Volkswagen's transformation and recently about his ability to turn around the brand's image following revelations the company had tested toxic fumes on monkeys.

Matthias Müller is likely to be replaced as chief executive of Volkswagen as the carmaker struggles to move on from the diesel emissions scandal that claimed the scalp of his predecessor.

VW threw the future of its chief executive into doubt with a pair of ambiguous statements on Tuesday, saying it was "considering a further development of the management structure of the group".

Volkswagen may replace its chief executive as part of a management restructure, the auto maker has said. Its profit margin climbed to 7.4% of sales past year from 6% in 2015, when the crisis hit. Diess joined VW from southern-German rival BMW AG in mid 2015 just before the scandal erupted publicly. But when Winterkorn fell, he had been with Volkswagen for less than three months.

The 64-year-old Mueller, who took over in 2015 and has worked inside the Volkswagen structure his entire adult life, has two years left on his current contract.

In tapping the 59-year-old Diess for the top job, Volkswagen would elevate a senior executive from its own ranks, while handing the reins to someone who was not at the automaker when the diesel cheating began.

Last year, powerful labor chief Bernd Osterloh changed tack, telling a German newspaper that the dispute with Diess over how to implement reforms at the brand has been laid to rest and that the two sides aimed to "enter calmer waters".
