Mexico says US troops on border won't be armed

Caravan in Trump's Crosshairs Stalls Far From Border

The immediate trouble is a lack of transportation to get the group to the next stop, the city of Puebla en route to the Mexican capital.

Organized by a group of volunteers called Pueblos Sin Fronteras, or People Without Borders, the caravan is meant to help migrants safely reach the United States, bypassing not only authorities who would seek to deport them, but gangs and cartels who are known to assault vulnerable migrants. This is an annual event that began in 2010 to publicize the plight of Central Americans forced to flee from violence and poverty. By Thursday morning, migrants were boarding buses to leave the town of Matias Romero in the southern state of Oaxaca, where their journey had been held up at the weekend.

"Five migrants who were part of the caravan arrived here this week, but they're already gone", he said. "But Mexico responded admirably and we thank the government for the way it handled this caravan", he said.

Cillizza: Do organizers feel like they accomplished their mission? But the logistics remain fluid.

Rangel and the criminal groups reached their truce despite the Mexican government rejecting the idea.

Late Tuesday, Mexican foreign minister Luis Videgaray tweeted that the caravan had "disbanded". Mujica said that "a minimum of 80 percent" of the migrants in the group come from Honduras.

Now, the 29-year-old fighter is charged with three counts of assault and one count of felony criminal mischief. Journalist Chisanga Malata took to Twitter with the image, claiming that it's Conor McGregor's booking ticket.

While a handful of the migrants may attempt to cross into the US and some are planning to seek asylum, the yearly march is mostly held to raise awareness to the dangers of fleeing gang violence or political upheaval and corruption in Central American nations. In fact, he said, numerous migrants hoping to reach the border planned to ask for asylum - not sneak over illegally. "They're rapists. And some, I assume, are good people", he said previously.

Trump also referred to an unrelated terrorist attack in Manhattan in November previous year carried out by Sayfullo Saipov, an immigrant from Uzbekistan, who investigators say appears to have been radicalized online in the USA, not in his home country. In a barrage of tweets, he threatened to end the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) to punish Mexico for not detaining immigrants, blamed Democrats for weak immigration laws, and boldly exclaimed that DACA, the program to help students and professionals brought to the United States as children, was dead.

On Wednesday, Trump repeated his calls for tighter border controls.

A BuzzFeed News reporter who has been traveling with the caravan also tweeted that he hasn't seen or heard reports of people being raped. In order to be eligible for the programs a person has to have lived in the United States prior to June 15, 2007 and has to have been brought here as a child.

The Mexican government has denied that it is allowing the migrants to travel unimpeded across its territory.
