Public UK wage database showcases game industry's gender pay gap

Men paid more in 78% of employers

It means that an average woman at these firms earns 63p for every £1 the average man gets paid.

Of the 10,015 firms providing data, 78 per cent have a pay gap in favour of men.

The list of the worst pay gaps is rounded out by recruitment firm Fusion People (73.3%), heating contractor Aaron Services (73%), Malling Health (73%), Ryanair (71.8%), Connells Survey and Valuation (71%) and East Midlands-based Fosse Healthcare (69.8%).

Companies who have not filed their pay gap figures will face legal action including court orders and fines, the government has said, but they are to be given a month's grace first.

Vice informed staff of these figures on Thursday, although the company was not required to do so as none of its individual United Kingdom operations, which include its television division, fashion title iD and production business Pulse, have more than 250 employees, which is the legal cut off to file publicly.

Almost eight out of 10 companies and public sector bodies pay men more than women as the deadline passed for organisations to report their gender pay gaps.

Another energy giant, Scottish Power, had a gender pay gap of 21.9%, with women being paid less than men.

This tendency, the only thing that makes women women, is dismissed as an obstacle to equality - in effect, an obstacle to being "real men" - and advocates of gender pay equality have repeatedly suggested that childbearing is what really holds women back from achieving true equality. At the same time, approx eight percent of the companies said that they do not discriminate on the gender basis.

Sam Smethers, chief executive of the Fawcett Society, said: "Gender pay gap reporting is a game changer in terms of workplace culture and practices".

Creasy told The Guardian: "Women are already telling us that they are being told not to ask hard questions about this for fear of affecting their careers and we want to be clear that trying to silence employees isn't the right response". "As ever, however, the statistics are limited and need to be interpreted with care".
