Apple's working on curved iPhones with touchless gestures
05 April 2018, 12:56 | Yvette Williams
Apple is also looking at ways that could let iPhone users interact with their phones without touching them, the Bloomberg report also notes. iPhone users could potentially make gestures above their phones near the display for certain controls. The gestures "likely won't be ready for consumers for at least two years".
The person added that the capability would take into account the proximity of the user's finger to the screen. The 10th anniversary iPhone's OLED display curves slightly at the bottom though it isn't that visible to the human eye. If the rumors are anything to go by, Apple will announce the brand new iPad Pro, featuring the key features and design of the company's current flagship handset, the iPhone X, at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2018 this June. An Apple spokeswoman declined to comment. But, again, don't expect these features to be included in this year's new iPhones. Smartphones have become increasingly similar as Apple, Samsung Electronics Co., Google, and Huawei Technologies Co. adopt features like full screens, advanced cameras, and facial recognition at roughly the same time. A newer model of the original iPhone X is also said to be resized. It's also the first iPhone to feature an OLED display. Apple's design would require gestures to be closer to the screen than with Project Soli, the person familiar with the situation said. But one of the sources who spoke with Bloomberg said that Apple's implementation will rely on technology built directly into the screen, rather than a motion sensor in the bezel as Air Gestures does.
