Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty won't seek re-election after handling of abuse case
In a statementposted on Facebook, Esty said: "I have determined that it is in the best interest of my constituents and my family to end my time in Congress at the end of this year and not seek re-election".
Baldwin said that she read Esty's full statement about the allegation and never saw an explanation for why Esty kept her chief of staff on the payroll for three months after she was told by about the alleged threats.
"Although we worked with the House Employment Counsel to investigate and ultimately dismiss this employee for his outrageous behavior with a former staffer, I believe it is important for the House Ethics Committee to conduct its own inquiry into this matter", Esty said in a written statement, acknowledging "it certainly was far from a ideal process".
Connecticut Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty, D-CT5, said Monday that she won't seek re-election in November.
Elizabeth Esty, a Connecticut Democrat, has announced that she is stepping down when her term in Congress ends this year rather than run for reelection. He received $5,041.67 in severance and a letter of recommendation from Esty that landed him a job as the OH coordinator for Sandy Hook Promise, which fights gun violence. Esty has been a vocal advocate for stronger gun laws but has been mostly unable to pass any new federal legislation since the 2012 shooting. Kain also told the Post that Baker had sexually harassed and punched her when she was working as a staffer.
Staffers said Esty repaid the federal government last week with her personal funds. When it appeared he might get the job, Ricci said, Baker called Esty to let her know he interviewed with the organization for an advocacy job in Ohio.
"To the survivor, I want to express my strongest apology for letting you down", Esty said Monday.

Ms. Esty was first elected to the House in 2012, representing a district that includes the cities of Waterbury and Danbury.
That's when she hired a new chief of staff and instituted mandatory harassment trainings for her staff, the letter states. Esty is the first female incumbent in the U.S. House who is not running again over sexual harassment-related allegations.
House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi commended Esty's former employee Anna Kain for coming forward and telling her story. Cathy Osten (D-Baltic) is Deputy Senate President Pro tem and added, "My stance is still that I would ask, respectfully ask, that the congresswoman take into consideration what I and other Democrats are asking and that she resign".
According to the Hartford Courant, Esty reportedly turned the matter over to lawyers to conduct an internal investigation rather than fire or suspend the man immediately.
Kain provided The Washington Post with a voicemail documenting the threat, which resulted in the issuance of a restraining order against Baker.
Esty was aware of Baker's behavior within a week of his accuser taking action against him, according to emails and recordings The WashingtonPost obtained. Then when the charges were substantiated, she signed a non-disclosure agreement, paid him $5,000 in severance, and gave him a positive job recommendation for a post at a nonprofit in her district, Sandy Hook Promise.
