First direct Australia to UK flight prepares for take off

Ready for take-off: Qantas launches first non-stop flight between Europe and Australia

"The last frontier of global aviation. the antidote to the tyranny of distance and a revolution for air travel in Australia", The Telegraph quoted Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce as saying previous year.

Travel firm Flight Centre has recorded "high demand" for the new Qantas flights.

The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner completed the 9,226-mile journey to arrive slightly earlier than the scheduled arrival time 5.10am.

The event marks the start of the only direct air link between Australia and Europe - and the fastest way of traveling between the two continents. For the first time, Australia and Europe have a direct air link. The original Kangaroo Route from Australia to London was named for the seven stops it made over four days back in 1947. "We are so excited".

The Western Australia government is hoping the new route will open up more tourism to the west of the country.

"There will be more opportunity than ever before for us to continue to showcase and highlight all the very best parts of Australia, including some of the most magnificent and iconic parts of Western Australia", he said.

The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner had more than han 230 passengers and 16 crew on board.

The total distance was 14,875 km from Perth.

In a Twitter post, Qantas said the flight was led by Captain Lisa Norman, Captain Jeff Foote, First Officer Dave Summergreene and Second Officer Troy Lane.

He told BBC Breakfast: "This way you get on in one place and land where you want to to go."Mr Smith said the aviation "holy grail" would be to fly direct from the east coast of Australia to London or NY".

The longest flights operating today pale in comparison with Singapore Airlines Flight 22. The carrier flew Airbus A340 airliners from the city-state to New York's Newark airport - a journey of over 15,000 kilometres - from 2004 to 2013, when the service was suspended to cut costs.
