So it was weird seeing Leonard Hamilton react like Dana Jacobson just asked him to solve a quantum physics equation. MI also outscored FSU 28-20 in the paint.
The Wolverines, as expected, struggled against the depth and athleticism of the Seminoles, but managed to pull through, as FSU didn't foul MI players in the closing seconds for some reason, and also turned the ball over 16 times, which statistically made the biggest difference. And by doing all the hard things, the Wolverines muscled their way to the Final Four.
MI advanced to the Final Four with a tight 58-54 win over Florida State Saturday night.
Phil Cofer's 16 points led Florida State with PJ Savoy's 12 the only other double figure totals as the Seminoles did stay close with 18-of-20 free throw shooting. Ramblers' leading scorer Clayton Custer wasn't quite at his best offensively in Saturday's win, sinking 2 of 8 shots for seven points. Florida State went back to Savoy for a game-tying attempt, but he missed his last 3-point tries. Moe Wagner, who attempted just three shots in the first half, got going in the second, scoring seven of his 12 points after the break including back-to-back scores midway through the second half as MI started to pull away with 7:46 to go. Hamilton rotated 10 players, living up to his mantra that it would take a team effort to earn a victory. They held Florida State to just 32.0% from the field and 23.5% from three. Loyola-Chicago is holding teams to 41% shooting on the season, and MI has really only had one big game offensively in this tournament.
Michigan's Zavier Simpson and Robinson combined to hit three free throws in the final minute to keep Florida State at bay.
From that point, any number of things could happen: FSU could steal the inbounds pass and tie the game or take the lead, or they could foul again, watch MI miss another free throw and get one more chance to tie the game with a long-distance shot.
Ask five players on the MI team what has changed since that trip to Chicago and you'll get different answers: toughness, focus, defense, being able to switch correctly on ball screens.
Nicolas Sarkozy in police custody over illegal campaign financing
Soon after becoming the French president, he invited the Libyan leader to France for a state visit and rolled out the red carpet. France's interior minister under Sarkozy, Brice Hortefeux , was also questioned by police on Tuesday but was not detained.
For many, Hamilton's decision to not foul was more than a head-scratcher.
Jacobson continued explaining her question as Hamilton added an eyeroll and offered few words of explanation. "... The game was over".
Jacobson clarified, and Hamilton almost walked out of the interview.
When pressed about it after the game, Hamilton was combative and dismissive.
". That's uncharacteristic. Our kids fought their butts off to get themselves in position to give themselves a chance to win".
But that was enough as the Seminoles, in dropping a 58-54 season-ender, could not get the ball to drop at the end. "We just couldn't get in a good offensive rhythm".
I normally wouldn't believe it, but after that interview who the hell knows.
