Images from the huge station showed scores of police trying to hold back protesters at the entrance.

A spokesperson for Network Rail added: "Due to a mass trespass incident, services into Manchester Piccadilly are now suspended".

"Trains continue to be able to arrive and depart from this station as normal and customers are now able to access the platforms".

"Trains may be amended, cancelled or delayed".

Social media users posting pictures from among the crowd are stating that the demonstration is in support of Afrin, which Kurds have claimed is being "ethnically cleansed" by the Turkish military.

One tweeted: "Stay away from Kings Cross at all costs, we have riots going on".

Approximately 100 activists made their way from the concourse at Manchester Piccadilly onto the tracks at around 1pm.

It resulted in services being halted, affecting commuters in Yorkshire and across the country.

Passengers leaving or returning to South Yorkshire via Manchester are experiencing extensive delays this afternoon, after protesters climbed onto the train tracks and blocked all rail lines through the station.

A spokesman for British Transport Police said: "Officers were in attendance at London Kings Cross station where they responded to a number of protesters attempting to enter the station at around 17:00 GMT".
