Araria bypolls Both the ruling and the opposition is confident of winning the polls
The arch-rivals Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and Samajwadi Party (SP) had come together in Phulpur and Gorakhpur, first time after 1991, to take on the BJP which swept Uttar Pradesh assembly elections a year ago.
An FIR has been lodged against Bihar BJP chief Nityanand Rai for violating the model code of conduct by allegedly making provocative speech during campaigning for Araria Lok Sabha bypolls, an official said today.
Coming to Bihar bye-elections, a 57 percent voter turnout was recorded in Araria whereas in Jehanabad and Bhabhua 50.6 per cent and 54.3 voter turnout was registered respectively.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath casts his vote for Gorakhpur ByPoll at a polling station, says 'For development and good governance, BJP is necessary'. In Jehanabad Assembly seat, the RJD fielded Uday Yadav. The major competition is between the candidates of Congress-Rashtriya Janata Dal and National Democratic Alliance (NDA).
For Gorakhpur, the key contenders are Upendra Shukla from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Praveen Nishad from Samajwadi Party (SP) and Surhita Chatterjee Karim from Congress. The two main candidates for the Araria seat are Alam and Pradip Singh of BJP.
RJD candidate Mohammed Taslimuddin beat BJP's sitting MP Pradeep Kumar Singh in 2014 in Araria, a Lok Sabha seat that had been an NDA bastion since 1996. He was contesting against JD (U)'s Abhiram Sharma who had won the seat in 2010 when his party was an ally of the BJP.
The results to be announced on March 14 are being keenly watched in Uttar Pradesh as it could lead to a bigger opposition alliance before the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. Jahanabad and Bhabua assembly seats fell vacant due to the deaths of RJD Legislator Mundrika Yadav and BJP legislator Anand Bhushan Pandey, respectively. The saffron party has fielded Pandey's wife Rinky Rani and her principal challenger is Congress candidate Shambhu Singh Patel. Sources are saying that this will be the first major electoral test for Nitish Kumar who walked out of the Mahagathbandhan previous year and joined hands with the BJP to form the government.
