Mikaela Shiffrin won her second straight World Cup overall title on Friday with a third-place finish in a giant slalom race in Germany. She finished second in one slalom and failed to finish another. Given her dominance in slalom throughout her career, Shiffrin was expected to defend her 2014 Olympic gold medal in the event but finished fourth. Norway's Ragnhild Mowinckel won the event by 0.74 of a second, her first career victory.
The 22-year-old secured back-to-back crystal globes following giant slalom gold at the Pyeongchang Olympics last month.
Shiffrin has won 11 races this season and has become the first skier with 42 World Cup wins in total before turning 23.
"It's still my goal to finish the season as strong as I can", Shiffrin said, adding she would "try to have some fire" in Are.
Shiffrin is only the second American female skier to win multiple overall titles, behind speed specialist Lindsey Vonn who has won four. Gallhuber's compatriot Bernadette Schildfinished third, 0.39 seconds behind the leader. "I wanted to fight my best and see what happened". "For Wendy, I knew she had a really good run because I could hear the announcers from the top, but I thought 'not today Wendy!'"
Shiffrin also leads the slalom standings with two races left and can wrap that up with victory on Saturday.
The World Cup finals begin Wednesday with women's and men's downhill, and the season concludes next Sunday. Her last race was at age 26.
"For me the important thing is the balance between risk and being smart". "But still every time I get in the start gate I want to perform at my highest level, and that's the biggest goal there". Moser-Proell returned and won another 21 races.
