In the election results declared last week, Rio's newly formed Nationalist Progressive Democratic Party (NPDP) won 17 of the 60 seats, whereas, its ally the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) bagged 12 constituencies.

The BJP legislators also informed the Governor that Y Patton has been elected as the BJP Leader for the 13 House of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly.

The NDPP on Sunday exuded confidence that they would be able to form a stable government in the state as the numbers were on their side.

Senior Naga People's Front leader TR Zeliang submitted his resignation letter to the governor on Tuesday, backing NDPP's Neiphiu Rio as the new chief minister of Nagaland, putting an end to speculation of an impending constitutional crisis.

Rio served as chief minister of Nagaland as NPF candidate for three consecutive terms between 2003-14.

Korea's Kim during Pyongyang trip
The visit comes in the wake of the thaw brought about by North Korea's attendance at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics last month. South Korea says it has agreed with North Korea to hold summit talks between the two countries' presidents in late April.

Two BJP ministers are still in the Zeliang cabinet although the national party had allied with Rio before the polls. Acharya had told reporters that Rio and Zeliang have claimed to have majority support, but "I have not invited anyone to form the government as of now". Though JD (U) had a pre-poll alliance with the NPF, it has chosen to go with the NDPP-BJP combine.

Rio said the National People's Party's Nagaland president Ato Yepthomi expressed willingness to extend support to the NDPP-BJP alliance in the formation of the government. On Saturday, Zeliang had said he was ready to form the government with the BJP. "It is good for the Northeast, good for India", he said.

The NDPP has contested in 40 seats while the BJP in 20.

The Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) is leading in 12 seats while its ally the BJP in six. Even if both NPF and NPP pull out of the Manipur government, it would have the simple majority with help from the lone seat of the NDA partner LJP. Supporting NPF, Manipur NPP president Thangminlien Kipgen and Manipur NPF president Awangbow Newmai reached out to BJP chief Amit Shah. "First is the Naga political issue, we should bring solution as early as possible because Prime Minister Narendra Modi is very concerned and an agreement will be signed on Aug 10".
