'Protect all statues, maintain law and order': Madras HC to TN govt

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers allegedly took down the statue of Russian revolutionary Vladimir Lenin in Tripura last week after the saffron party registered a resounding victory in the state Assembly elections 2018. DMK leader MK Stalin demanded that Raja be arrested while MDMK, CPM and CPI too demanded action against him. The crime was seen as another wrong manner in choosing to celebrate, and the criminals were reported and arrested by the police. He stated that there is no need to deploy police for protection of Periyar Statue.

He also hit out at BJP leader H Raja, whose controversial Facebook post, encouraging people to vandalise Periyar statues soon after a statue of Lenin was damaged in Tripura raised criticism. The prime minister today, strongly disapproved the vandalism of Lenin statue.

Many people are now beginning to draw a parallel with what's happening in India and the Afghanistan's erstwhile Taliban rule, when the famous Buddha statue was brought down by religious fanatics.

Purohit's assertion has come at a time when earlier in the day Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh condemned incidents of statue vandalism in several states and called it "unfortunate and unjustified".

Utica College on lock down while police investigate threat

Chief Justice Indira Banerjee of the Madras HC stated that all the statues have to be protected, in the light of the act of vandalism on a Periyar statue in Tirupattur. "We Tamilians will protect it", he said, alleging that this issue had been raised to divert attention from the formation of the Cauvery management board. The PM has spoken to the Home Minister to direct all states to ensure that stringent action is taken against anyone who indulges in such acts of vandalism. BJP state president Tamilisai Soundararajan said: "His statement about removing Periyar statue was his personal opinion". "They are expected to report within 48 hours", Ipper Monchak, West Tripura district Superintendent of Police, told The Hindu.

Meanwhile, the CPI said Francis is not a party activist. The BJP worker who was reportedly involved in stoning Periyar's statue has been expelled by the party.
