Punjab as the most populous state has 52 votes per senate seat from its provincial assembly while Baluchistan, the least populated, only has 9 votes.

Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif has said that despite absence of the election symbol of Lion his party's candidate won the Sargodha by election with a margin of 20 thousand votes.

Two days after the Senate elections, newly-elected Senator Mirza Muhammad Afridi from the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) is expected to join Pakistan Muslim League - Nawaz (PML-N).

Elections for Upper House (Senate) are underway in the national and provincial assemblies of Pakistan as 133 candidates contest for 52 seats on Saturday.

France warns of sanctions - Iran denies link to Bahrain cell
Tehran supports Mr Al Assad against rebels, including groups backed by the West, and backs Hezbollah in Lebanon. Iran claims that it will continue its programs despite the pressure from the USA and other Western countries.

The sources further informed that PML-N would likely to dole out the slot of Deputy Chairman Senate in the bargain for the slot of Chairman Senate and in this connection the strategy would be devised in the light of the meetings and discussions with the coalition partners and smaller parties in the Upper House.

Forced to run as independents by court order in the aftermath of Nawaz's ousting, expect the PML-N to rely heavily on Punjab to bring them the majority of their senate seats. Senate has 104 members elected for six years, but half of them retire every three years at completion of term and new Senators are elected indirectly by provincial and national assemblies through proportional representation. They can not use PML-N name and platform due to a recent decision by Supreme Court. The people would not tolerate this now, he said.

The official results will not immediately show how well PML-N has done because a number of candidates were barred from running under the party's banner after Sharif was removed from office. Senators are elected by provincial and federal lawmakers and due to proportional representation, even a single vote can make a huge difference. Sharif has been deeply critical of the judiciary, accusing it of a conspiracy to hurt his party and Pakistan's civilian leaders.

Under Pakistan's constitution a bill can not become law unless it is passed by both upper and lower houses of parliament.
