"My unwavering love and honest affection for this city and its great people will never come to an end", said Barry in a press conference. She did not take questions.

However, Barry pleaded guilty Tuesday morning in Davidson County Criminal Court to felony theft of property.

The resignation was part of a plea agreement on the felony charge. She will pay $11,000 in restitution and serve three years' probation.

Barry has promised to repay the city and serve three years' probation.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation closed its separate investigation into the matter after the plea deal was reached, according to an agency spokeswoman.

For much of her time in office, Forrest, who lead the mayor's police security detail, was a regular presence with Barry during out-of-town city trips. The investigation into her relationship with Forrest uncovered some nude photos on Forrest's work cell phone which suggested the two had relations while the sergeant was still on duty.

"This one is going to go down in the history books", Barry told supporters during her victory speech on election night.

Vice Mayor David Briley was sworn hours later on Tuesday as Nashville's new leader. His first words were: "I need some coffee".

"It has been the honor and it has been the privilege of my entire professional life to have had the blessing of this opportunity to be your mayor", Barry said in a written statement she posted online.

Korea's Kim during Pyongyang trip
The visit comes in the wake of the thaw brought about by North Korea's attendance at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics last month. South Korea says it has agreed with North Korea to hold summit talks between the two countries' presidents in late April.

According to District Attorney Glenn Funk, "Had this case gone to trial, witnesses are available who would testify that in March 2016 and January 2018 Megan Barry caused over 10K but less than 60K in Metro Nashville city funds to be expended unlawfully on Mr. Robert Forrest".

Last year, Barry's 22-year-old son Max died after overdosing on drugs.

"This is a very bad day".

Barry is married to Bruce Barry, a Vanderbilt University professor and columnist for the Nashville Scene.

Even in the face of heartbreak, Barry vowed to stick to her agenda and perhaps her biggest goal: a plan for mass transit.

Barry, a Democrat, became mayor in 2015.

Forrest's overtime pay more than doubled from 2014-15 to the 2016-17 budget year, according to Metro Nashville Police records.

Barry, 54, admitted to the affair January 31. She would not say when the affair ended, only saying that it's over.

Although Barry had sky-high approval ratings in office, her policy agenda hit road blocks recently with the collapse of the Cloud Hill project to redevelop Greer Stadium and the mayor's unexpected proposal to end inpatient services at Nashville General Hospital.
