Yemen war: senators push to end US support of Saudi Arabia

The US politicians noted that the US involvement in the hostilities had not been authorized by the Congress and suggested that the resolution would give the legislature an opportunity to "withdraw US Armed Forces from an unauthorized war".

Saudi Arabia, concerned about Iran's support of the Houthis in a neighboring country, formed a coalition and intervened in support of Hadi. "There is no legal authorization for the United States to be part of a war inside Yemen, and Congress can not continue to be silent".

"We believe that, as Congress has not declared war or authorized military force, this conflict (in Yemen) is unconstitutional and unauthorized", Sanders said at a conference. The US has backed the Saudi forces with intelligence, ammunition and refueling.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) called out the administration of President Donald Trump on Wednesday for its continued participation in the brutal war being waged in Yemen.

Introduced by Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Mike Lee (R-UT), the bill makes use of the 1973 War Powers Act, which gives legislators the ability to force an end to any unauthorized U.S. military conflict.

Lee said lawmakers must address the use of military force "conflict by conflict", instead of a broad new bill.

The effort seeks to invoke the War Powers Resolution and end the U.S. role in the war-ravaged country.

"Without Congressional authorization, our engagement in the war in Yemen should be restricted to providing desperately needed humanitarian aid, and diplomatic efforts to resolve it", Sanders said in a statement.

"We have to deal with these conflict by conflict", Lee said, while Sanders asserted that "If we can establish this principle, it will be a significant departure in policy for the United States". Rand Paul, R-Ky., and held up a Senate vote for the 2018 National Defense Authorization Act.

The Senate proposal was met with approval on Twitter.

As a result of the Saudi-led war, a child under the age of five in Yemen dies of preventable causes every 10 minutes. An estimated 17 million people - 60 percent of the total population - do not have reliable access to food and are at risk of starvation.

The directive is clear: "Congress hereby directs the President to remove United States Armed Forces from hostilities in the Republic of Yemen, except United States Armed Forces engaged in operations directed at al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula or associated forces".
