The governors of the USA states of Connecticut, New York, New Jersey and Rhode Island Thursday announced the formation of "States for Gun Safety" to combat gun violence in the aftermath of the Florida high school massacre.
The Governors say the coalition has been in the works for about a year but efforts were accelerated by the recent Florida massacre.
The states will collaborate on several fronts, including creating a multi-state task force to trace and intercept illegal guns and establishing a regional gun violence research consortium through their public colleges and universities.
Cuomo said the "groundbreaking partnership" to prevent illegal guns from crossing state lines would "be able to better inform policymakers nationwide on how to keep their communities safe". They are just not going to wait any longer for Washington to take action.
Parents of victims, as well as survivors of the Parkland school shooting, berated President Trump at the White House Wednesday.
Governor Andrew Cuomo says the federal response to gun safety has been "absurd". For years, gun control advocates have said such research is hamstrung at the federal level.
The Memorandum of Understanding doesn't get into specifics on information regarding legal gun-owners, and if or how that information may be shared amongst regional law enforcement agencies.
CT has a law barring people subject to a temporary restraining order from buying guns, but those people can easily travel to another state and purchase a firearm, Malloy said. In New York, for example, people who are the subject of protection orders are barred from purchasing firearms. The states also are pursuing a Regional Gun Violence Research Consortium.
NICS, which searches three nationally held databases, is overseen by the Federal Bureau of Investigations.
"Gun violence is not a New Jersey problem, a NY problem, a CT problem, a Rhode Island problem, or a problem for any particular state or region - it is a national problem", Murphy said.
"This is a federal government that has gone backwards on this issue", Cuomo said.
Similarly, New York State has a database of tens of thousands of people deemed too mentally unstable to carry firearms but those names are not part of the federal database that other states would use to see if they are eligible to buy a gun.
