Doctor Claudia Kawas found that people who drink two glasses of win or beer reduced their chances of dying prematurely by 18%. Those who packed a few extra kilos (but weren't obese) decreased their odds of an earlier grave by 3 percent. But you shouldn't give up your workouts just yet.
"People who drank moderate amounts of alcohol or coffee lived longer than those who abstained", the study reports.
"It's not bad to be skinny when you're young but it's very bad to be skinny when you're old", said Kawas. These people are inspiring- they drink wine, drink coffee, gain weight, but they exercise and use their brains.
While good genes do play a part, researchers also discovered that close, meaningful relationships with friends and family have major benefits for healthy cognitive function in the older generations. "Maybe that can tell us something", Kawas added.
Another revelation was that the people who spent two hours a day on a hobby were able to cut their risk by 21 percent. According to her studies, around 80 percent of those who have reached 90 years old are disabled, and 40 percent suffer from issues such as dementia.
Binge drinking - defined as downing at least four drinks for women or five drinks for men within a few hours - is especially unsafe.
However, while the UCI researchers found a link between these daily habits and a long life, it doesn't necessarily mean that the lifestyle choices caused the participants to live to 90. It is said that this may even be better for one's health than exercise. And really, who are we to doubt her?
