However, there is a limitation that both devices need to be on the same Wi-Fi network. The app is aimed at making it easy for Windows 10 users to transfer their photos and videos from mobiles to their Windows 10 desktop.

Microsoft notes that the mobile transfer features are available in the Windows 10 Photos version 2018.18011.13110.0 or higher.

Using Photos Companion is pretty quick when compared to OneDrive.

You can transfer the photos and videos to the Photos app on your PC and then edit and enhance it or customize using ink, and then share it with your friends and loved ones.

What Is Photos Companion? Microsoft's iOS App Quickly Transfers Photos To PC

Microsoft has launched a new iOS app intended for iPhone users who like taking pictures. The photo team has been working on this project for months with the intent for it to work with the Windows 10 built-in photo app. As we mentioned, your devices need to be on the same Wi-Fi network to let you successfully transfer content. Also, if in case the import from mobile over Wi-Fi option is not visible in the Photos app on your computer, you need to enable the Show additional preview option that is available in the Settings of the Photos app.

The new Photos Companion app is a fresh creation straight out of Redmond's skunkworks division named Microsoft Garage. For instance, you have to scan the QR code every time you want to sync your photos. So the Garage and Photos team opted for a Wi-Fi based direct transfer system.

Microsoft found that students were great at telling stories through video, but they had difficulties transferring content from multiple smartphones to a single PC where media projects are created.

"We began developing a simple, experimental app for iOS and Android to see if we could unblock educators and help them begin using the Photos app in their classrooms", Microsoft was quoted as saying by MacRumors.
