"This issue is isolated to a limited subpopulation of engines", it added. "We identified the potentially affected engines and got in touch with the customers".

"A cornerstone in UTC's ability to consistently generate positive earnings growth remains its ability to ramp up production of its GTF engine, which could be constrained until the latest defect on several of its most recently produced GTF engines is able to be resolved", Heymann said. The GTF engine has demonstrated its promised ability to reduce fuel burn by 16 percent to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by 50 percent to the regulatory standard, and to lower the noise footprint by 75 percent.

Last year, other problems with the GTF engine also caused delays in deliveries of the twin-engine A320neo, a more fuel-efficient version of the Airbus company's best-selling airliner.

Greg Hayes, chief executive officer of United Technologies, said last April that Pratt incurred costs to retrofit the engines to address durability issues, and related to "helping the airlines through some of this". It put the European planemaker on the map three decades ago, allowing the company to go from a speck in Boeing Co.'s rear-view mirror to powerful equal in what has become a de-facto duopoly in the global civil-aircraft market.

An Airbus spokesman said it is "in discussions with customers about delivery schedules" on a case-by-case basis.

The American aircraft engine-maker Pratt & Whitney on Monday said it is working with Airbus and its customers, including IndiGo, to minimise any "operational disruptions".

"Pratt & Whitney is working with Airbus to implement the remediation plans set forth in its all operator transmission". In order to cascade info and mitigating measures in a timely manner, Airbus and EASA agreed to issue an Emergency Airworthiness Directive (EAD) to ensure continued safe operation of the PW A320neo fleet.

Airbus said of the total 113 aircraft worldwide, some 10 per centhave both engines affected. "In late January and early February of this year, four of these modified engines did not perform as anticipated", the company said.

In a statement issued on Saturday, IndiGo confirmed that there are some issues with the engine of the said aircraft and keeping the safety as top priority, it has decided not to fly these three aircrafts.

If one engine fails, a twin engine aircraft can safely land with the other operative engine.
