Eurostar to launch London-Amsterdam direct service in April
12 February 2018, 12:58 | Clyde Nash
Amsterdam just four hours away
Trains will depart twice a day at 8.31am and 5.31pm, going through Brussels and Rotterdam before arriving in Amsterdam.
Announcing the route, Eurostar said: "The launch of the London to Amsterdam service marks a historic milestone in the expansion of global high-speed rail travel, revolutionising the connection between these important destinations".
Eurostar says ticket prices will start from £35 one way.
Passengers are checked at the border control prior to boarding a Eurostar train at Midi/Zuid railway station in Brussels, Belgium, on March 15, 2016.
The new Eurostar route will see two trains a day leave St Pancreas for the Netherlands capital - famed for it's weed-selling coffee shops and Red Light District.
The new high-speed rail route is created to compete with airline journeys to the Netherlands, by undercutting total prices, emissions and time spent on airline travel.
Nicolas Petrovic, the outgoing chief executive of Eurostar, said the Netherlands service heralded a new era in worldwide high-speed rail. That compares to 70 direct flights daily from London to Amsterdam, for example.
A return trip won't be quite so smooth though, as passengers will have to change at Brussels, where they'll go through security and passport control, before returning to London. Over the last twenty-three years, the market for travel between London and Paris has more than doubled as customers increasingly choose high speed rail over plane. This is a temporary measure while the governments of the Netherlands and United Kingdom are working on an agreement which will allow passport controls to be done in the Netherlands.
