Essential Skips Android 8.0, to Release Android 8.1 Instead
03 February 2018, 01:46 | Yvette Williams
Essential ditches Android 8.0 Oreo upgrade for PH-1, will skip to 8.1 due to 'stability issues'
Notification Dots are also included in this update, which is a feature we've seen in quite a few launchers thus far, and it will essentially place a dot on an app icon if you have a new notification of some sort. The good news? Well, the good news is that Essential is going to concentrate its efforts on Android 8.1 Oreo. The entry-level Nokia 3 is yet to make the switch, but the company has announced that an update is "around the corner". After three beta releases, the company is not quite satisfied that the update is ready for general release.
We've known for a while that Essential intends to upgrade its first smartphone, the Essential Phone, to Android Oreo in the near future thanks to the clean build of the OS onboard.
Android 8.0 Oreo is undoubtedly the most advanced Android update till date and for that very same reason, people around the world have been waiting for this update on their respective Android smartphones. If you want to try out the update before it officially launches, you can join the beta program right now. Apparently, it discovered several stability issues in 8.0 during testing, which it believes will be addressed by 8.1. We do not know if these issues were specific to the PH-1 itself or not.
Even bad news is often sweetened when communicated sincerely and in a timely fashion, which "Team Essential" is trying to do today. Therefore, it's going to direct all its efforts to move the Essential Phone directly from Nougat to Android 8.1.
Essential is skipping the release of Android 8.0 for Android 8.1 due to instability concerns. We now don't have a release date for it, but we'll let you know when it begins getting pushed out.
