Bad but still not as bad as a cigarette

That might be even harder to do for e-cigarettes, since many users are either former or current smokers, and there'd be no easy way to tell where the cancer risk from smoking ends and the cancer risk from vaping begins.

"We know from talking to teachers that in schools where smoking rates are high in the local community, cigarettes are sold to younger children by teen smokers in order to maintain their own smoking".

Writing in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the authors conclude: "It is therefore possible that e-cigarette smoke may contribute to lung and bladder cancer, as well as heart disease, in humans".

According to researchers, laboratory tests showed that when mice were to e-cig vapour they had higher levels of DNA damage in the heart, lungs and bladder than those just breathing clean air.

The nicotine in e-cigarettes may damage DNA in ways that could cause cancer, new research on mice has suggested. A typical e-cigarette is filled with a variety of chemicals, including propylene glycol, glycerine, nicotine, and flavorings such as menthol.

Now there were 18 million e-cigarette smokers in the U.S. and 16% of high school students used the devices, said the researchers.

There was also conclusive evidence that e-cigarettes can explode and cause burns and projectile injuries.

Earnings lift Wall St to record highs
USA stock index futures rose ahead of Wall Street's open Thursday as Caterpillar reported better-than-expected quarterly results. Advancing issues outnumbered declining ones on the NYSE by a 1.20-to-1 ratio; on Nasdaq, a 1.54-to-1 ratio favored advancers.

"This is one in a long line of false alarms which may be putting people off the switch from smoking to vaping which would undoubtedly be of great benefit to them", he added.

The study was carried out by testing the effects of e-cigarette vapours on healthy mice and human cells, which means further studies will be required in order to determine if e-cigarettes can harm human organs similarly. Natural DNA fix mechanisms were also suppressed in the mice exposed to the smoke.

Jasmine Just at Cancer Research UK said: "The evidence so far shows that e-cigarettes are far less harmful than smoking". Meanwhile cultured human cells reacted in a similar manner when exposed to nicotine and its derivatives. Kadimisetty said, "I never expected the DNA damage from e-cigarettes to be equal to tobacco cigarettes".

And to help Mr MacKinnon has pledged to champion Scotland's Charter for a Tobacco-free Generation - six principles laid down by Ash towards a smoke free nation.

While tobacco smoke contains nitrosamines and many carcinogenic chemicals from burning, ECS contains nicotine and some relatively harmless organic solvents.

Last week a major United States report into the health effects of e-cigarettes found that vaping might be useful to help people quit smoking.
