Saudi blockade of Yemen set to resume after brief respite
The Yemeni foreign minister said "the legitimate government of Yemen, in common with the Arab coalition led by Saudi Arabia, supports a peaceful solution", in comments translated into Russian.
The latest aid package, which follows last week's $2-billion Saudi cash injection to Yemen's central bank, comes amid an ever-broadening crisis in the war-torn country, where the conflict, cholera and looming starvation have killed thousands and put millions of lives at risk.
Saudi Arabia and its embassies overseas have been keen to promote the country's recent humanitarian efforts in Yemen, including a deposit of $2 billion in Yemen's central bank last week following an urgent appeal. "$1.5-billion in new humanitarian aid funding for distribution across United Nations agencies and worldwide relief organisations", the coalition announced in a statement.
The Saudi-led coalition has come under mounting global criticism for civilian casualties caused by airstrikes, the destruction of basic infrastructure and its blockade of key Yemeni ports, which are a lifeline for vital imports.
Another almost 2,200 Yemenis have died of cholera amid deteriorating hygiene and sanitation conditions, according to the World Health Organisation.
Currently, 1.3-million people "urgently require assistance to survive.a generation of children is growing up in suffering and deprivation", added the OCHA.
"Canadian arms exports to the chief instigator of one of the worst humanitarian crises of our time should be subject to scrutiny of the highest order, yet Ottawa consistently attempts to sanitize them with dubious rationalizations".
According to the report presented by HRW, the Saudi-led Arab coalition allegedly carried out 87 illegal attacks, killing 1,000 civilians.
To date, more than 10,000 people have died during the war in Yemen and more than two million people have been displaced since fighting broke out, according to the UN.
The United Nations Population Fund, known as the UNFPA, will also receive $2-million to assist Yemeni women and girls who have been victims of sexual and gender-based violence.
In 2017, donors provided US$1.65 billion (70.5 per cent) out of US$2.34 billion that humanitarian partners in Yemen requested.
